That Ringing in Your Ears? It Has a Name.

Tinnitus can be described as a noise or sound that can be heard in your ears or head without any external stimulus. It can be variable in how it sounds, the volume perceived, the duration it is noticed and the severity of impact. It is very prevalent in New Zealand where it is estimated that 13.5% of people aged over 65 years have tinnitus (Wu et al., 2015).

Common Tinnitus Symptoms

Tinnitus can sound and feel different for everyone. Some people experience it occasionally, while for others, it’s constant. Common symptoms include:

  • A high-pitched ringing in one or both ears

  • Buzzing, humming, hissing, or clicking sounds

  • A pulsing or whooshing noise in sync with your heartbeat (pulsatile tinnitus)

  • Sound that seems to come from inside the head, not an external source

  • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping due to internal noise

  • Heightened awareness of sounds in quiet environments

If you’re experiencing any of these, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone. A proper assessment is the first step to understanding and managing tinnitus.

How Can We Help?

At Barclay Winter Audiology, we believe that a multidisciplinary approach, including counselling, sound therapy and behavioural strategies, is the best method to help manage tinnitus. We offer:

  • A comprehensive tinnitus assessment is the first step towards understanding your symptoms. We take time to explore your hearing, medical history, and lifestyle to uncover possible causes and tailor the right support for you.

  • We provide comprehensive education on tinnitus, helping you understand what's happening and why. Because every case is different, we take time to explain your specific triggers, underlying factors, and management options in a way that makes sense to you.

  • Hearing aids and sound therapy are highly effective for managing tinnitus, especially when hearing loss is present. By restoring external sound and masking internal noise, these tools help reduce the contrast and make tinnitus less noticeable throughout the day.

  • For patients where tinnitus is caused by stress, anxiety, or trouble sleeping. When needed, we may refer you to trusted mental health professionals for additional support, ensuring your care addresses both the emotional and physical impact of tinnitus.

What are the Common Risk Factors?

  1. Hearing health is the strongest predictor of tinnitus presence and severity. Recent studies have shown that individuals with self-reported hearing difficulties and trouble hearing in everyday situations (especially in noisy environments) are more likely to experience tinnitus

  2. Psychological traits such as neuroticism, anxiety, irritability, and emotional reactivity are linked to increased tinnitus severity.

  3. How long does the appointment take?
The free hearing check takes about 15–20 minutes.

  4. Mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, are associated with greater distress from tinnitus.

  5. Poor sleep quality, including insomnia and difficulty maintaining sleep are also associated with more severe tinnitus symptoms (Hobeika et al., 2025)
